ResumoThe response function, the photofraction, the total and peak efficiencies of coaxial-type Ge(Li) detectors for gamma rays from thick disk sources placed on the axis of the detector were calculated by the Monte Carlo method. The calculation by the Monte Carlo code, REFUM-GE, is correct below about 3 MeV gamma rays, due to the neglect of the bremsstrahlung emission in the detector. The calculated peak efficiencies and the response functions of a true coaxial Ge(Li) detector were compared with the experimental data for point isotropic sources of various energies. The agreement between calculation and experiment is good, especially at lower photon energies. The peak efficiencies and the response functions for true coaxial and wrap-around coaxial Ge(Li) detectors were calculated for carbon, manganese and aluminum disk photon sources. They are in very good agreement with the experimental data. As for the computing time, the REFUM-GE code takes 1 s per ≈ 300 histories by the use of the FACOM 230-60 computer and requires 8000–10000 histories for convergence.
