Improvement in High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance of TiAl by Addition of 0.2 mass% Zr

ResumoThe isothermal oxidation behavior of TiAl coupons containing 0.2 mass% Zr has been studied in a temperature range 1200 to 1400 K in a flow of purified oxygen under atmospheric pressure. The addition of Zr results in a significant decrease in the overall oxidation rate at 1200 and 1300 K. This is attributable to the formation of thin and very protective alumina scales. However, this effect becomes very small at 1350 K and disappears at 1400 K. The cyclic oxidation test with temperature varying between room temperature and 1300 K showed that the addition of Zr is similarly effective. The alumina scale formed showed no spallation for at least 100 cycles (100 h at temperature).
