ResumoThe influence of liquid phase properties and sparger design on the gas holdup and liquid circulation velocity in a 65 litre external loop airlift reactor was investigated. Several salt solutions (NaCl, KCl, Na2SO4, MgSO4, CaCl2) were used in the range 0.01 to 0.2M as well as sucrose solutions in the range 0.5 to 8% (w/v) ie. concentrations typical of fermentation media. A number of gas distributing plates were used with from 5 to 221 orifices varying in diameter from 0.5 to 3.0 mm. At low airflow rates (2 to 6 m3/h) the distributing plate parameters had the greatest influence on gas holdup and liquid velocity, whereas at higher airflow rates (10 to 14 m3/h) the liquid phase properties became more important.
