Abstract: The recent archaeological studies on AEtolia show that at the end of the Mycenean world, there was an intensification of activity in the territory. This created an atmosphere suitable for the development of mythical creativity which seems to be in relation with the transition to Archaism. The most elaborate traditions are related to the role played by AEtolia in the colonization. The end of the Dark Ages is also a period when is built the historical role of sanctuaries in the region. The spaces that serve as instrument of the consolidation of the communities are defined, in a parallel but different historical development than that of the polis, as far as village communities settle around a sanctuary, and not around a town.
