Resumo

his article intends to discuss the means by which the founders of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, late in the 19"‘ century, adopted the mission to protect the national language and literature in order to create an overall identity and to achieve a social acknowledgment inside the fragmented and hierarchical literate society of Rio de Janeiro.
