SYNOPSIS The sources and specificity of the odour trail pheromones in the ponerine Termitopone laevigata , three species of Monomorium , and Huberia striata , have been determined. The lack of specificity of trail pheromones produced in the poison gland is discussed in terms of trace constituents which are common to myrmicine venoms. The chemistry of the poison gland secretions produced by the major formicid subfamilies is discussed.
