ResumoFrom the magnitude and angular dependence of the intensity of light scattered from xenon near its critical point we have measured the Ornstein-Zernike long-range correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}$ and the reduced compressibility ${(\frac{\ensuremath{\partial}\ensuremath{\rho}}{\ensuremath{\partial}\ensuremath{\mu}})}_{T}$. We find $\ensuremath{\xi}=(3.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.10){\ensuremath{\epsilon}}^{\ensuremath{-}0.58\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05}$ \AA{} and ${(\frac{\ensuremath{\partial}\ensuremath{\rho}}{\ensuremath{\partial}\ensuremath{\mu}})}_{T}=(1.43\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}9}{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}^{\ensuremath{-}1.21\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03}$ ${\mathrm{g}}^{2}$/erg ${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$ along the critical isochore, and ${(\frac{\ensuremath{\partial}\ensuremath{\rho}}{\ensuremath{\partial}\ensuremath{\mu}})}_{T}=(0.346\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}9}{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}^{\ensuremath{-}1.21\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02}$ ${\mathrm{g}}^{2}$/erg ${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$ along the coexistence curve, with $\ensuremath{\epsilon}\ensuremath{\equiv}\frac{|T\ensuremath{-}{T}_{c}|}{{T}_{c}}$. Using our results, we have compared the predictions of the Kawasaki-Kadanoff-Swift mode-mode coupling theories with measurements of the thermal diffusivity in xenon.
