Resumo

The following interview with Dr. Paul Schilpp, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Northwestern University and Visit ing Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, concentrates upon the internationally known Library of Living Series. Before giving some of Dr. Schilpp's responses to inquiries presented to him in his office in Carbondale, Illinois in December, 1967, on the Li brary of Living Series, let us review some of Dr. Schilpp's background. Dr. Schilpp graduated with honors from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1916 with an A.B., from Northwestern University in 1922 with an M.A., from Garrett Theological Seminary in 1922 with a B.D., and Stanford University in 1936 with a Ph.D. He has taught courses on the college level in philosophy for over 46 years in four different colleges full time and many other univer sities on a short time basis both in this country as well as abroad. Since 1929, Dr. Schilpp has written or edited over 20 books. Of these 13 are in the Library of Living Series. Numerous other published materials and scholarly papers, total ing over 200 pieces, have been presented by Dr. Schilpp through out the world on philosophy, religion, and education. Some of the many recognitions that Dr. Schilpp has re ceived are the following: (1) Who's Who m America; (2) Who Knows?And What; (3) International Who's Who; (4) Directory of American Scholars; (5) Who's Who in Philoso phy; (6) Leaders in Education; (7) Who's Who in Education; (8) Honorary degrees from Baldwin-Wallace College and from Springfield College; (9) President of the Western Division of the American Philosophical Association; (10) 1939 Northwest ern University Yearbook dedicated to Dr. Schilpp?the teacher; (11) Visiting Professor of Philosophy at University of Munich; (12) Lecturer at over a dozen major lectureships at twelve dif ferent American colleges; (13) Speaker for six months in India on a Watwmull Foundation Grant lecturing in 15 Indian Univer sities; (14) Representative of the United States Department of State at Pakistan Philosophical World Congress; (IS) Recip ient of two $15,000 National Foundation on the Humanities Grants for the Library of Living Philosophers over a period of two years; and (16) one of only two American philosophers to act as philosophy consultant to the Encyclopedia Britannica. Dr. Schilpp began his professional career as a Methodist clergyman and served as pastor of Calvary Methodist Church in Terre Haute, Indiana, for three years, 1918-1921. He joined the faculty of the University of Puget Sound in 1922 and has continued actively in college teaching. Dr. Schilpp has explained his move from the church to the college as follows: I wanted more than 30 minutes of pulpit time on Sunday to teach people. Besides, it's my way of trying to con tribute to saving the world. I teach to make people think. The world will emote and act its way straight to hell un less it starts thinking?thinking straight !
