Resumo

The ICRU 38 report ‘Dose and volume specification for reporting intra-cavitary therapy in gynaecology’ [ [9] ICRU, International Commission of Radiation Units and Measurements. Dose and volume specification for reporting intracavitary therapy in gynaecology, ICRU Report 38, 1985, Bethesda, MD. Google Scholar ] was, at the time of publication, a pioneering effort as it provided a method of specification in terms of volumes rather than a dose at a single point. However, fifteen years after publication of ICRU-38, it has to be recognised that some of the concepts in the report did not gain wide acceptance and others failed the test of time. Two papers in this issue of Radiotherapy and Oncology [ 6 Grigsby P.W. Williamson J.F. Chao K.S.C. Perez C.A. Cervical tumour control evaluated with ICRU 38 reference volumes and integrated reference air kerma (IRAK). These papers pose questions, which will need to be addressed in a revision of the ICRU-38 report.
