ResumoThis article examines at local level the emergence of tourism as a lead sector for economic development. The example of Livingstone, Zambia illustrates the importance of locality-based studies in African tourism. Livingstone's development as a tourism centre is traced from 1905 and linked to the changing political economy of development in Southern Africa.
