ResumoLaboratory cultured virgin fireflies (Photuris versicolor) answered triple flashes of intervals 200 to 550 ms significantly more frequently than field-captured femmes fatales, while the latter answered double flashes of 600 to 1950 ms significantly more frequently. Laboratory cultured virgins mated to sterile males did not answer double or triple flashes of any interval class but maintained the courtship posture. It is suggested that mating terminates virgin answering behaviour but something transferred by the male is necessary to induce femme fatale behaviour.
