Resumo

The yrast shape of a nucleus changes with spin and in a few cases it had been predicted that a stable superdeformed shape (a prolate rotor with an axis ratio of 2:1) could exist before the nucleus fissions. A superdeformed yrast band extending from 24ℏ to 60ℏ has been observed in 152Dy and the present status of the experimental data is presented. Topics covered include the spin assignments, the quadrupole moment, the moments of inertia and the decay out of the band. Recent data on the feeding of the band is reported and possible explanations are discussed of the rapid cooling at high spin which is necessary in order to see yrast states up to 60ℏ.
