ResumoYNECOMASTIA, the hypertrophy of mam-G mary tissue in the male, occurs, in the majority of instances, as a benign lesion of the breast. It is important medically for two main reasons: (1) a mistaken diagnosis of cancer of the male breast may be made, and the use of the differential diagnosis may be required; and (2) gynecomastia itself may occur as the result of some other systemic symptom complex, such as endocrine imbalance, liver di- seases, testicular abnormalities (including malignant neoplasms), tumors of the adrenal glands or of other glands of internal secretion, and many associated medical complaints. The term "gynecomastia" (from two Greek nouns: yuvq, woman + paat65, breast, meaning "with breasts like a woman") was first used in its modern sense in about the middle of the last century, when the pathological nature of mammary hypertrophy in the male was first appreciated. There is evidence, however, that gynecomastia is an ancient disease.Statues of Pharaoh Seti I (1303-1290 B.C.) show clearly his excessively developed breasts (Fig. 1).Contrary to Egyptian custom, he took his wife and his daughters with him on all official occasions.Perhaps this was to prove the manhood that his appearance belied.
