ResumoReversible switching effects were observed in amorphous carbon sandwiched between aluminum electrodes. Carbon was produced by evaporation of spectroscopically pure carbon rods in vacuum or in argon atmosphere. Phenomena which throw light on the mechanism of memory in the switching effect were studied first. New information was obtained by investigating the process of forming the samples. The switching effect in carbon was found to differ in many respect from that in glasses and semiconductors. We believe we have shown that the switching with memory in carbon is a purely electronic phenomenon.
