ResumoA diagnosis of the main forest species commercialized as lumber was carried in the cities of Itupiranga, Oriximiná and Parauapebas of the state of Pará, Brazil. Information on the species used, costs involved in production and sales value of raw material were obtained from previously elaborated questionnaires and individual interviews with sawmills managers and employees. It was observed that 33 forest species are mostly used by sawmills, in which the cassava and sucupira trees presented the lowest mean acquisition and processing costs, while cedar and ipe had the highest costs. The species with higher profitability (gross profit) were cedar, curupixá, ipe and itaúba, with values above US$ 339.62 m-3.
