ResumoAbstract Several water‐soluble cellulose derivatives have been subjected to degradation with a cellulase preparation from Streptomyces sp. QM B814. Structural analysis of the enzymolysis products is described, particularly in relation to carboxymethylcellulose. For comparison, corresponding derivatives of lichenin, a soluble β‐glucan structurally related to cellulose, have been examined with the use of this enzyme. The results indicate that the distribution of substituents in the cellulose derivatives is not uniform and that accessibility is important in determining the pattern of derivatization. Both carboxymethyl‐and hydro‐xyethylcellulose appear to be attacked by the cellulase in a similar fashion, and the two kinds of substituent groups are equally effective in limiting hydrolysis by this enzyme.
