Diels-Alder reactions of benzene derivatives are very rare. However, sterically strained benzene rings like that in (1) can act as diene component: 1:1 addition with strong dienophiles leads to bridged barrelenes [n = 7 or 8, RCF3 or CN (only n = 8)].
