ResumoTwo cases of arachnidism were caused by Chiracanthium inclusum and Argiope aurantia , both common spiders in the domestic environment. Other spiders capable of producing dermal or systemic reactions may be recognized. The hypersensitivity phenomenon makes any spider bite potentially dangerous. Epidemiologic study of arachnidism and the evaluation of its role as a public health problem are frustrated because most cases are unrecognized or unreported. The study of arachnidism and other forms of envenomation would be facilitated by a national repository of information on spider bites and venomous spiders.
