ResumoIn this report we focus on the subject of the earth's ring current and radiation belts. Other particle results can be found in the presentations listed in the Index of this quadrennial (1983–1986) U.S. Report to the IUGG (see the SPR‐Magnetosphere and SPR‐Aeronomy sections for particle results pertaining, respectively, to the magnetosphere and the ionosphere/thermosphere). In the previous U.S. Report, ring‐current and radiation‐belt results through 1982 were included in a comprehensive presentation on near‐equatorial magnetospheric particles by Young [1983]. Since then, several volumes of conference proceedings and a book related to the subject at hand have appeared: Energetic Ion Composition in the Earth's Magnetosphere [ Johnson , 1983], Solar‐Terrestrial Physics [ Carovillano and Forbes , 1983], Progress in Solar‐Terrestrial Physics [ Roederer , 1983], Quantitative Aspects of Magnetospheric Physics [ Lyons and Williams , 1984], Space Plasma Simulations [ Ashour‐Abdalla and Dutton , 1985], and Ion Acceleration in the Magnetosphere and Ionosphere [ Chang , 1986].
