Resumo

This article deals with the attempts of the military regime lead by the general Augusto Pinochet to penetrate workers organizations between the times of the coup d'état and the installation of the Labor plan designed by José Piñera. The article analyzes the various strategies used in order to prolong in time, the support that the regime had since the coup of 1973 from the so-called Poder Gremial, composed amongst others, by a significant faction of the labor movement who opposed Salvador Allende. Also examined are the reasons behind the failure of these strategies to co-opt the labor movement that were confirmed by the triumph of neo-liberal labor policies. The underlying hypothesis argues that the military regimes plan was not capable of breaking through the historic tradition of labor unions among Chilean workers.
