Resumo

The authors describe a method of estimating a metacarpal density index. The index obtained reflects the quantity of calcium per unit volume of cortical bone. The hands of 150 patients, who had had gastrectomies, were examined some years after operation. The readings were compared with those from the same number of control subjects matched for age and sex. It was shown that: (a)There was a statistically significant reduction in the amount of calcium in the bones of post-gastrectomy patients. (b)No correlation occurred between the metacarpal density and the interval since operation. (c)The metacarpal cortical width (of Nordin and Barnett) was not different in the gastrectomy and the control groups. The Nordin and Barnett index is a measure of osteoporosis so the results indicate that there is no increase in osteoporosis after gastrectomy. (d)The authors found no correlation between metacarpal density index and the percentage of osteoid in bone sections. This they attribute to technical factors while taking the biopsy specimen.
