Resumo

The work of filmmaker and femi-nist, post-colonial theorist Trinh T. Minh-ha isconsidered here in terms of the challenges it posesfor both visual anthropology and the discipline’sproject on a wider scale. Trinh’s work reflects de-veloping trends in anthropology – especially in therealm of the visual – in relation to both post-colonialcritique and the growing interest in new methodsfor the production of knowledge about the worldwhich reject the cerebral rationality of older West-ern anthropological theory in favor of more corpo-ral, individual and sensorial means of understandinghuman experience. However, I argue that the radicalnature of Trinh’s critique and her position outside ofthe confines of academic anthropology result in ad-vances in this direction in her work that go beyondthe limited attempts in the same vein currently indevelopment within the discipline. In this article Iexplore this interface between Trinh’s work and suchtrends in contemporary visual anthropology beforelooking more closely at the outcome of her experi-mental practice in one particular work, the FourthDimension, Trinh’s penultimate film produced in2001.
