ResumoThe acoustic Grüneisen parameter, γa, an approximation to the high-temperature γ found by neglecting optic modes and high-frequency modes, has been measured up to 0.4 GPa for three glasses. The value of γ has been measured on these glasses over the same pressure range using the adiabatic pressure change technique, γad. The values of these two Grüneisen parameters are dissimilar, γad being far below γad. It is argued that this discrepancy between γa and γad is due to the low coordination in the glassy structure, and not to the glassy state. It is further argued that in minerals where the crystallographic coordination is higher, the value of γa and γad will be much closer.
