Medical Malpractice and Liability Issues

Em marco de 1997, o entao presidente da International Association of Bioethics (IAB), Alastair Campbell, visitou o Brasil a convite da Sociedade Brasileira de Bioetica. Inicialmente, apresentou-se no II Congresso Brasileiro de Bioetica, realizado em Brasilia, “capital arquiteturalmente projetada e peca representativa do desenho artistico”, segundo suas palavras. Em seguida, conheceu Sao Paulo, onde participou de um Seminario Internacional de Bioetica Clinica desenvolvido no Hospital Publico de Heliopolis, a principal favela do maior centro populacional e industrial da America do Sul. Regressando a Gra-Bretanha, escreveu um emocionado editorial no IAB News relatando o que havia visto e sentido na viagem. Um dos paragrafos dizia o seguinte: “When I left Brazil after a too short visit, it was with a sense of gratitude to my hosts, not just for their friendship and outstanding hospitality, but for the realisation of how so differently I now perceive the nature of Bioethics. I had glimpsed what it must be like to sustain a public health service with minimal resources and massive problems of poverty. I had seen something of the environmental challenges of massive urbanization without adequate infrastructure to sustain it.
