Resumo

This paper compares the aggregated results of the two major time- budget studies that have been undertaken in Australia. The first was the Cities Commission survey in Albury-Wodonga and Melbourne in 1974. The second was carried out in Melbourne and Ballarat in 1981. The two studies are comparable in terms of target groups, sample size and questions asked. They allow us to make some broad comparisons of time allocation changes between such activities as work, leisure and domestic labour in the seven-year period. Comparisons are made with similar, recent work in the UK — specifically that of Gershuny — and the paper concludes with some pointers for future Australian research.
