ResumoJust as Smokey the Bear persuaded Americans of all ages to assume responsibility for fire prevention, a trench-coated detective from the canine corps has become a persuasive symbol for crime-fighting citizens. “McGruff” and the information campaign built around him are the result of cooperation among government agencies, forward-looking American corporations and the Crime Prevention Coalition. In this article, “Mac” Gray describes the behind-the-scenes effort that culminated in a successful “business outreach” information program about violence and its prevention. B. M. “Mac” Gray is currently director of the Community Crime Prevention Center and staff director for the National Citizens' Crime Prevention Campaign. Prior to this, he was director of the National Crime Prevention Institute, School of Justice Administration, University of Louisville. He also served as police projects director with the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va. Mr. Gray holds a M.S. in Criminal Justice Education from Eastern Kentucky University.
