For her PhD in folklore from Indiana University, she completed two years of fieldwork in Native American communities and often works in narrative studies (especially myth). Her research often focuses on intersections between culture, identity, and expressivity. Additional publications and teaching interests include folklore, popular culture, women's studies, nature, and travel. She recently taught for the Semester at Sea program and spent a semester teaching in Croatia on a Fulbright grant.
