Proteus vulgaris, a highly motile, swarming organism was used to determine whether the smeared layer on the surface of cut dentin in a cavity preparation was a barrier to the passage of the test organism through the dentinal tubules. Noncarious, extracted teeth were used in the model system. Under the in vitro conditions of this study, the smeared layer delayed the passage of the organism through the dentinal tubules but did not block the tubules. Se utilizó el Proteus vulgaris, organismo de alta motilidad, para determinar si la capa de barro dentinario de la superficie de la dentina, durante la preparación de la cavidad es una barrera para el pasaje de estos organismos a través de los túbulos dentinarios. Se utilizaron dientes extraídos no cariados en este sistema modelo. En las condiciones in vitro de este estudio, la capa de barro dentinario retrasa el pasaje de los microorganismos a través de los túbulos dentinarios pero no los bloquea.
