The concept of becoming appears in 1965, was developed in 1970 and, at least in my view, better illuminated in 1975 (Bion, 1965, pp. 152–5; 1970, p. 26; 1991 [1975], p. 183; 1991 [1979] p. 471; reviews can be seen in Sandler, 2005, p. 75; 2015, pp. 246, 276, 290–5). Transformations in K and O are grouped under a single entity, Transformations in Psycho‐analysis (Bion, 1965, p. 144) – a concept made explicit in the work Transformations which has not gained widespread use.3. Analogic models drawn from biology and medicine abound in Bion's work; e.g, contact barrier, taken from Freud's ‘Project’; the digestive and reproductive models on thinking and his second theory on links.4. That is, Bion's theory of transformation is not related to the psychoanalytical model of the mind, but to what happens between interpretation and the next association of the patient, and the other way around; Bion's transformations is a theory of observation of the clinical psychoanalysis – of the type of ‘transformations’ that are made by the patient. So, this theory of observation is different from a theory of psychoanalysis proper.5. I was allowed to have access to the original, Italian version.6. In his quasi‐mathematical notation: the processes are marked by the sign Tα and the final products, by the signal Tβ; if appertaining to the patient, T(p)□α and T(p)β.7. Devised by Emil Kraeplin, perfected by W. Bonhöffer and E.Bleuler and adopted by Freud and Bion.8. In the psychoanalytic movement, in that time, already increasingly dominated by the ‘Satanic Jargonieur’, which abhors scientific methods – which include respect to established nomenclature in order to warrant a good enough inter‐peers communication (Bion, 1991 [1977], p. 302).9. I sympathize with his idea, having made the same attempt elsewhere (Sandler, 2011, pp. 3 and 23).10. That corresponds to the Naïve Realist's error, according to Kant; please see p. 13.11. In our initial understanding and when we write papers. One who is acquainted enough with the available literature published both in books and papers can easily verify the proportion.12. A phrase that can be seen in another of Civitarese's text and is detectable in many rational explanations that compose the ethos of the present paper.13. Bion's historical path conducive to this realization, useful to those who need the clinical data may consult Bion's drafts, written around 1960, posthumously catalogued by his dedicated wife, Mrs Francesca Bion to elaborate Cogitations (1992): pp. 38, 39, 43; a complete review can be seen in Sandler (2005, p. 219).14. Bion (1965, pp. 139–40).15. With the exception of mathematics and physics, which are not only older, but also the more developed methods, it seems that poetical and literary forms, based in metaphor, metonymy and other verbal forms, are the earliest methods to apprehend reality hitherto known (Vico, 1999 [1725]; Berlin, 1997 [1979]; Sandler, 1997–2003, 2001, 2013b).
