ResumoOver the course of their nearly 30-year history, the ABCD(E) criteria have been used globally in medical education and in the lay press to provide simple parameters for assessment of pigmented lesions that need to be further evaluated by a dermatologist. In this article, the efficacy and limitations of the ABCDE criteria as both a clinical tool and a public message will be reviewed. In this article, the efficacy and limitations of the ABCDE criteria as both a clinical tool and a public message will be reviewed. Time to move forward after the report of the AAD Task Force for the ABCDEs of MelanomaJournal of the American Academy of DermatologyVol. 73Issue 4PreviewTo the Editor: The report of the American Academy of Dermatology Task Force for the ABCDEs of Melanoma concludes that it is an “unanswered” question whether the current ABCDE criteria are useful as a public health message and self-detection tool for laypersons.1 More Americans have died from melanoma in nearly each successive year since the current ABCD criteria were publicized 30 years ago. The institutional inertia allowing these criteria's unaltered, continued use does not serve our patients well. Unfortunately, this mnemonic requires detailed explanations of each morphologic feature, including exceptions. The ability to apply morphologic criteria in the correct context, to be aware of exceptions, and to be able to accurately classify cutaneous lesions requires extensive training and experience.
