ResumoWater from Vineyard Sound, Mass., has a rapid bactericidal activity against both penicillin‐sensitive and ‐resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus but under the conditions of these experiments, exhibits no anticoliform effect. It has been demonstrated that the active factor is a large, non‐dialyzable, autoclave‐labile molecule. The preponderance of gram‐negative bacteria in the sea is discussed in light of the above findings.
