ResumoR e a c t i o n s i n v o l v i n g t h e t r a n s f e r of one nuc leon be tween l i gh t nucle i a t m e d i u m e n e r g y h a v e b e e n sa id to be a choice t e s t i n g g r o u n d to obse rve t h e p resence of J~* in nuc le i (1,2). T h e s imp les t of such r eac t ions , p + d = d b p , h a s a l r e a d y been s tud ied , a n d t h e r e s u l t s can be i n t e r p r e t e d b y m e a n s of a J~* c o m p o n e n t in t he d e u t e r o n (2). Such a h y p o t h e s i s could be conf i rmed b y t h e s t u d y of d + d = aHe-~n a n d p + a H e = = d + 3 H e . Those two r eac t i ons a re p a r t of a p r o g r a m in p rogress a t S a t u r n e to inves t iga te nuc l eon e x c h a n g e processes . I n t h i s p a p e r we wil l p r e s e n t t h e r e su l t conce rn ing 4 H e + p = 3 H e + d a t 3.98 GeV/e. F o r t h i s p a r t i c u l a r i n c i d e n t energy , and in t h e d o m a i n of m o m e n t u m t r a n s f e r u n d e r i n v e s t i g a t i o n , i t is n o t poss ible to d r a w i n f o r m a t i o n a b o u t t he p re sence of zV*. W e do t h i n k , howeve r , t h a t i t is n e c e s s a r y to h a v e d a t a a t al l energies s ince one ha s to be ab le to g ive good accoun t of t h e o n e n e u t r o n t r a n s f e r r e a c t i o n a t t h e energ ies w h e r e J~* r e sonances do n o t p l a y a role i f one w a n t s to e x t r a c t i n fo rmat ion a b o u t 2i '* in nuc le i f r om t h e s ame r eac t ion done a t h i g h e r energies a n d l l igher
