Resumo

Telemedicine technology is one strategy to improve the accessibility of mental health care in the rural setting ( Hilty and Servis, 1999 Hilty DM Servis ME Psychiatry and primary care. in: Hales RE Yudofsky SC Talbott JA Textbook of Psychiatry. 3rd ed. American Psychiatric Press, Washington, DC1999: 1617-1643 Google Scholar ; Preston, 1992 Preston J Using telemedicine to improve health care in distant areas. Hosp Community Psychiatry. 1992; 43: 25-32 PubMed Google Scholar ). This is very important in light of the shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists, particularly in rural settings ( Office of Technology Assessment, 1990 Office of Technology Assessment Health Care in Rural America. US Government Printing Office, Washington, DC1990 Google Scholar ). Children and their parents reported high satisfaction with telepsychiatry in one rural setting ( Blackmon et al., 1997 Blackmon LE Kaak HO Ranseen J Consumer satisfaction with telemedicine child psychiatry consultation in rural Kentucky. Psychiatr Serv. 1997; 48: 1464-1466 Crossref PubMed Scopus (79) Google Scholar ). Some clinicians wonder whether telepsychiatry is useful for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), though, because of the inability of the child to sit still at times. The case report below describes the successful use of telepsychiatry for a child with ADHD.
