Abstract The effects of competition and work stoppages on intrinsic motivation were examined in a laboratory study. Pairs of participants were assigned to one of four experimental conditions to play the Atari Pole Position race car video game (Atari, Inc., 1983). Hypothesized main effects of competition on intrinsic motivation were minimally supported.
