Resumo

My first executive decision as the Editor of TRANSFUSION was to honor the five previous Editors of the journal on the cover of the current issue. I hope the remaining decisions I will have to make will be as easy. It is with considerable trepidation that I assume the leadership of the journal following the living legends Tibor Greenwalt, Thomas Zuck, and Jeffrey McCullough and the honored memories of Richard Rosenfeld and Robert Langdell. Collectively, they have been responsible for the growth of TRANSFUSION since its inception in 1961 to be the preeminent journal in transfusion medicine. I am fortunate that the transition of the editorial office has been relatively atraumatic due to the gracious assistance of Karen Evans and Jeffrey McCullough and the organizational skills of Mary Ann Reese. Mary Ann is eager to help prospective TRANSFUSION authors in submission and revision of articles via the TRANSFUSION Manuscript Central website (http://transfusion.manuscriptcentral.com). We are also fortunate to have recruited the assistance of R. Sue Shirey and Christine Barrasso at Johns Hopkins as Assistant Editors to help with technical matters. Laurie Munk at the AABB National Office has also provided superb support during the transition of the editorial office from Minneapolis to Baltimore and the shift from the paper-based system to the electronic manuscript submission system. The primary responsibility for managing the manuscript review process will rest with the Associate Editors. Fortunately, Mike Busch, Sunny Dzik, George Garratty, Jerry Sandler and Ed Snyder will continue to serve in this important capacity. Regrettably, Margot Kruskall has elected to step down as an Associate Editor due to personal and professional commitments; we will miss her insightful guidance as we tackle new issues and themes for the journal. Chris Hillyer and Ron Strauss have accepted my invitation to become new Associate Editors; as major contributors to transfusion medicine and the journal TRANSFUSION in the past, I know they will be invaluable in their support. My second executive decision as the new Editor is to avoid the temptation to provide a written “state of the union” for the journal. At this point, I am sure that I do not know all the answers, or even the questions. I hope that you will send me your comments and concerns as I attempt to build upon the foundation established by the five previous editors of TRANSFUSION who we honor on our cover.
