ResumoDuring the past five years my colleagues and I have been attempting to develop a comprehensive observational knowledge of the phenomena at the boundary of the earth's magnetosphere. One of our early efforts is described in the discussion of the ‘Effective radial extent of the geomagnetic field’ in a paper on observations with Pioneer 3 in December 1958 [Van Allen and Frank, 1959a]. This work has been continued with Pioneer 4 [Van Allen and Frank, 19596], with Explorer 12 [Rosser et al., 1962; Rosser, 1963; Freeman et al., 1963; Freeman, 1963], and with Explorer 14 [Frank, Van Allen, Whelpley, and Craven, 1963; Frank, Van Allen, and Macagno, 1963]. These studies have been done over a wide range of sun-earth-probe angles, both east and west of the earth-sun line, and at large radial distances, near the equatorial plane.
