When I last corresponded with you in these pages,1 I described the challenges of keeping pace with rapidly changing practices in scientific and medical publishing. Authors expect ever-shorter review times, with instant electronic publication of accepted papers at the lowest possible cost and with intelligent cross-referencing to related material. Libraries at universities, medical schools, and research centers are increasingly scrutinizing the value of their journal holdings and seek new and complex pricing models. Readers expect journals to adopt new electronic forms and capabilities without large increases in prices or fees. These changing practices and other considerations have become a greater financial challenge to ASBMR and threaten its other key programs. The JBMR's financial base, which was very advantaged in the early years of self-publishing, has become more and more marginal. Commercial publishers with large journal portfolios have the infrastructure and expert staff required to cost-effectively adapt to rapidly changing practices in journal publishing. As a result, many societies have benefited from arrangements in which the business challenges of journal publishing are handed to a commercial firm while the society focuses on the quality of journal contents and obtains a favorable financial return from its publications program. Over the last year, the Publishing Review Group (PRG), led by Publications Committee Chair F. Patrick Ross and Marc Drezner (President, ASBMR, 2008–2009), completed a comprehensive assessment of ASBMR's publications program. This analysis identified overwhelming advantages to outsourcing the production and business management of the Society's publications. Deliberations by the PRG culminated in selection of Wiley-Blackwell from over six other firms. Wiley-Blackwell was selected because of their track record in publishing high-impact society journals and their creative business plans for the JBMR and the Primer. The contract we negotiated ensures that the Society retains complete authority and responsibility for editorial matters, with Wiley-Blackwell managing the business of production and marketing, with significant input from ASBMR. To better coordinate our editorial process, we have relocated our office staff to the ASBMR headquarters in Washington, DC. Wiley-Blackwell's primary focus, along with that of the JBMR editors, will be on continuing to streamline and accelerate the peer review process. The new partnership with Wiley-Blackwell has immediate benefits. First, we are pleased to project a stable and steadily growing revenue stream for JBMR owing to Wiley's global reach, which includes emerging countries in Asia and other parts of the world. Other improvements also will be realized in the layout and formatting of JBMR. You will notice that the interior pages have a contemporary and more readable look. In addition, authors will now be able to review proofs of their articles electronically. A brand-new JBMR Web site is now live and features user-friendly navigation, a more attractive design, prominent displays of notable papers, and previews of upcoming articles. Finally, we are delighted to announce the online availability of two "virtual issues" that are collections of our Perspective (minireview) series published since July 2008. Expect other virtual issues organized around specific themes or topics in the coming months. Lastly, I also want to take this opportunity to welcome a new slate of Editorial Board members, whose names appear in this issue, and thank the members who have served the JBMR and have rotated off the Board. Your service has helped JBMR to maintain its number one position in the bone and mineral field. We are committed to selecting only the best basic and clinical science for publication in the Journal. I welcome your comments and encourage you to submit your work to the JBMR. REFERENCE 1 Clemens TL. No country for old men. J Bone Miner Res. 2009; 24: 1141.
