ResumoIncreased competition coupled with network convergence is leading today's communication market to demand more choices. This has resulted in a demand for network products with open application programming interfaces (APIs) for carrier and third-party development in multi-vendor networks. The concept of open, programmable networks allows network elements to be augmented or modified to introduce new services or to meet the needs of interworking with new equipment. Lucent Technologies has announced a major commitment to open, programmable networks with its introduction of the Lucent Softswitch, the PacketIN™ Application Server, the 7R/E™ Packet Solutions, its acquisition of Excel Switching Corporation, and its commitment to the Full Circle SM program, a development support program for third parties. This paper discusses the concept of open, programmable networks and elucidates Lucent's strategy, architecture, products, and development support systems for open programmability.
