Resumo

The present study analyzes the impact of the criminality on the individual and social welfare. The welfare loss is obtained by the willingness to pay of the individuals to a bundle of services of safety, captured by the Contingent Valuation Method and calculations are made with logit regression. The results of the regressions suggest that the public security is a normal good. It can be inferred that the monetary value of the welfare loss associated to the unsecurity feeling justifies the adoption of public policy of combat to the criminality. ⋆ Recebido em novembro de 2007, aprovado em julho de 2009.
