ResumoAbstract The use of organic solvents for the extraction and estimation of fat, wax and resin in raw cotton and sized and bleached goods is discussed. The extractable matter is a complex mixture, and judging by the analytical characteristics of extracts obtained in various ways, no complete separation of the constituents is possible by solvent extraction. Hot chloroform appears to be the most inclusive solvent, whereas ether, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride do not easily remove the resinous matter. It is recommended, therefore, that extraction with chloroform in a hot. Soxhlet apparatus be taken as a measure of the fat, wax and resin present, and extraction with carbon tetrachloride in an ordinary Soxhlet apparatus as determining the fat and wax only.
