Resumo

This project aimed at understanding spirituality dimension in the process of terminal illness and addressing the relationship between the existence and care, using for this purpose a qualitative and henomenological approach. To support our analysis we sought to further the principles of Palliative Care philosophy, which aims at a comprehensive care to patients and relatives, in the presence of a diagnosis of incurable disease. This philosophy seeks to ensure a balance in decision-making, avoiding futile interventions in terminally ill, acknowledging finite human life condition and limitations of medical science without, however, withdrawing all benefits of advances in scientific knowledge. The dimension of spirituality, and how it has been addressed in patients treated by this philosophy, became the main focus of this study. The literature review investigated the concepts of spirituality, spirit, religion, religiosity, and the existence of care. The empirical research data were collected through the methodology of oral history with family members of hospitalized patients and their health professionals. These narratives were split into categories and contextualized in the expression of spirituality and care.
