ResumoElectrocrystallization of the salt 1 yields deep blue-violet crystals. The structure analysis indicates that the compound obtained is a neutral species (no anion present) in which the unpaired electron is localized on one of the bpy units. The correct formulation is thus [Na⊕ ⊂ (bpy⊖)(bpy)2]•. This is the first example of a molecular “element” of the “cryptatium” family.
