ResumoThe communications potential of radio wave propagation through rock strata in the earth's crust is discussed. Included are geological and geophysical considerations pertinent to communications system design. Expressions are given for radio wave attenuation and wavelength, performance factors of bare and insulated linear antennas, and transmission loss between antennas immersed in dissipative media. Results of calculations are presented in graphical form and a sample of their application to a short transmission path is illustrated. Practical considerations in the design of communication circuits are discussed.
