ResumoThis year's JTPE Monograph signifies a brief departure from the tradition of having a team of researchers share their work around a particular theme. This past year marked the end of an era for the Sport Pedagogy community in North America and beyond. In June of 2001, Dr. Daryl Siedentop officially retired from The Ohio State University after a truly distinguished career that spanned four decades.During this time he was a driving force behind the emergence of Sport Pedagogy as a legitimate area of inquiry. His efforts in preparing future scholars and teacher educators, as well as his own scholarship, helped put us on the map.Sport Pedagogy often is/was viewed as "the new kid on the block."Daryl's passionate advocacy for Sport Pedagogy opposite other subdisciplines in the field was key to ensuring that today's generation of PETE faculty have a voice in their own departments.Though he graduated with a degree in Economics from Hope College, a small liberal arts college in Michigan, it was his involvement in playing and coaching baseball and basketball that ultimately led him to pursue his doctoral degree at Indiana University. In 1970 Daryl was hired at Ohio State in the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. In a decade that forever changed the face of physical education in higher education, Daryl embarked on a career whereby his efforts put Ohio State on the map as a leading program for advanced study in research on teaching and teacher education in physical education.Through the years he mentored over 80 PhD students who hailed from virtually every continent. Many have gone on to build highly respected research programs themselves.Daryl's work has seen him travel to Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, and Germany, among other places. In doing so he has put colleagues abroad in touch with his extensive work in teacher effectiveness research and his Sport Education Curriculum model. In no small way, Daryl has influenced many people in terms of how they go about their work, either as faculty members in a physical education teacher education program, as K-12 physical education teachers, or as professionals who deliver physical activity in other settings. If the profession of physical education were to start its version of a Hall of Fame as we see in professional sports, Daryl might well be among the first group of inductees.Very much like Eleanor Metheny, Jesse Feiring Williams, and Dudley Sargent, he has been a true leader and is leaving an indelible mark on the profession. But alas, no Cooperstown-like induction ceremony, no listing of career stats, no speeches… However, it seems appropriate that his career and accomplishments be recognized in a way that is befitting the environment that has shaped them.
