ResumoGone are the days of worshipping shapely, fertile deities or being astonished by the mysterious “fasting girls” of the Victorian era who seem to have survived on air. Weight has come into the forefront of modern society with the advent of television programs featuring weight loss competitions for both obese adults (The Biggest Loser) and children (Shaq's Big Challenge). Documentaries such as Lauren Greenfield's Thin (2006) as well as recent popular movies such as Super Size Me (2004) have educated us on the perils of restriction and binging. The “golden arches,” cachectic billboard models, sugar-free, low-carbohydrate, fat-free food, and news of a childhood obesity epidemic satiate us with gastronomical advice. Under this constant battering, psychiatrists are in need of an authoritative and updated source of information to assist them with the evaluation and treatment of disordered eating behaviors, in all of their contemporary and complex presentations. This comprehensive manual is timely because eating disorders (EDs) in the 21st century extend beyond the prototypical restricting anorexic to those suffering from, among other things, binge ED, obesity, subthreshold forms of anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and night eating syndromes.
