This Paper discusses various aspects relating to the assessment of existing and the design of new library buildings. It explores the new medias' impact and assesses the importance of qualities other than functional on its design. With reference to the Sachsische Landesbibliothek Staats- und Universitatsbibliothek Dresden, Niedersachsische Staats- und Universitatsbibliothek Gottingen and the Seattle Public Library Harry Faulkner-Brown's acknowledged guideline for the design of library buildings is being discussed briefly and updated whereever appropriate.
