Resumo

This paper addresses Brazilian public policy issue and development, focusing on agrarian reform and colonization rural settlements from the city of Acailândia (MA). We present partial results of a research, and this article goal is to discuss through a universitary extension project major land conflicts mapping and environmental injustices experienced by rural population settled in territory against mining projects (Carajas) or against the expansion fronts of the agribusiness in the area known as “Bico do Papagaio” Mesoregion (in the states of Maranhao, Para, and Tocantins). The mapping is focused on four dimensions of settlements social struggles processes and paths: 1) land occupation and conquest historical process; 2) use and occupation; 3) conflicts; 4) dreams and future. Historically overshadowed by hegemonic processes of development, the settlers reveal the heterogeneity of processes of struggle for land and civil rights in Brazil.
