Longitudinal quadratic electro-optical effect in KTN

The occurrence of the longitudinal quadratic electro-optic effect in potassium tantalo niobate (KTN) is reported. It is shown that this effect will occur for particular orientations in all crystals with the point group m3m. Measurements of the halfwave voltage in thin slices of KTN are in good agreement with theory.
