Resumo

The prevalence of Diabetes in Argentina is now reaching 9.6% of total population. Self blood glucose monitoring is one of the most helpful tools for diabetes healthcare, mainly in Type I diabetes patients and Type 2 diabetes patients under insulin treatment. We describe the design, development and implementation of a computer system for the collection, analysis, interpretation and storage of all the patient's blood glucose readings obtained by blood glucose meters in the course of Self Glucose Monitoring. The system has the capability to download data from the main models and brands of meters used in our market. It also has the chance to record all this data in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR). We resume our experience on building such a system and show that XML-based informatics standards like HL7-CDA and structured text file format technology for clinical and biomedical raw data representation and storage (native DB-XML), plus Web-based technologies such as Web Services (JAX-WS) are powerful tools for agile and collaborative development of healthcare systems.
