ResumoD URING the last few years, we have come to prefer fractional cisternal pneumoencepha lography to fract ional lumbar pneumoencepha lography , and have used it in over 100 pat ients with spaceoccupying lesions of various types. In no instance was a serious complication encountered. We feel t ha t the cisternal technique is superior because be t te r filling of the vent r icular sys tem is obtained using a smaller volume of air, because the pa t i en t the reby experiences less headache and other side effects such as nausea and vomit ing, and because it is possible to use this me thod with the pa t i en t in the semirecumbent position. This position is a definite advan tage when the pa t i en t is lethargic or has a marked hemiparesis . Frac t ional cisternal and fract ional l umbar pneumoencepha lography are, of course, both superior to lumbar pneumoencepha lography using the technique of large replacement .
